![]() ![]() I don’t want to raise my boy saying those sorts of things, and the first books you fall in love with are the ones you remember for life. ![]() This morning, I do not regret the editing. The boy toddled off to bed, leaving his poor father a jangled ball of nerves on the living room floor. The ensuing phone conversation was laden with so many racial stereotypes, bad ethnic jokes, and ‘l’s for ‘r’s that I was self-editing left, right, and centre. The President called the Prime Minister of China. Things were moving along quite nicely, the elevator was up in space, we were making up new voices for all the characters, and it happened. Right away, we moved on to ‘Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.’ We read ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, and loved every minute of it. ![]() I grew up reading the man’s books, and when my eldest son was born, I couldn’t wait until he was old enough to follow the wonderful stories and delightful characters. ![]()
